Official market statistics

Where the figures come from

The pages use official figures: INSEE’s series on business creations and business failures, and Eurostat’s structural business statistics and local units by region. We retrieved the values ourselves on 4 November 2026 and reproduce them unrounded; sums and densities are our own calculations and are labelled as such.

These are not figures from our dataset. They describe how many businesses exist, not how many of them would be included in an export from basedecontacts.fr or have a phone number. The status of our database is shown on the database status page; we state the scope of a specific selection in the quote.

What applies to all analyses

• The market economy is counted. Eurostat’s figures cover NACE sections B to S excluding public administration (O) and membership organisations (S94). Agriculture and forestry are not included.
• Businesses and local units. A business can have several local units. In 2024 Eurostat counts 5,445,577 businesses and 6,278,194 local units in France; each page states what is counted.
• Revised series. INSEE revises its quarterly series with each release; Eurostat flags a break in the French series in 2021. Each page gives the retrieval date.
• We do not interpret causes. The tables show levels and differences. Why a region or a sector performs differently cannot be read from them alone.

You may reuse the figures with attribution. Please cite the official source (INSEE or Eurostat) with the series and the date of the data; each page contains a citation template. If you need a figure for a particular industry or region that is missing here, write to info@basedecontacts.fr.
